WHO IS TO BLAME FOR THE SEA DECAYING?
Sensational information is spreading online, claiming that the “Black Sea is decaying due to a technological disaster.”
Pseudo-experts explain to shocked tourists: supposedly, it’s all the fault of “Infoksvodokanal,” which discharges wastewater into the sea, and that such horror has been happening since 2022 in accordance with an order from the head of the Regional Military Administration (RMA).
However, as they say, there are some nuances: the treated wastewater goes not into the sea, but into the Khadzhibey Estuary — and not since yesterday, but since June 2023, again in accordance with an order from the head of the Odesa RMA.
The fact that the respected “researchers” have not noticed any change in the quality of sea water over the past three years speaks to the quality of wastewater treatment. For reference, the abbreviation SBO “Pivnichna” mentioned in the publications stands for “Biological Treatment Station.” This means that not only mechanical, but also biological treatment takes place there. This method does not harm the flora and fauna and at the same time makes it possible to remove other substances from the wastewater, including ammonia and phosphates. That is why most water utilities use biological treatment. Today, the quality of treated wastewater meets all sanitary requirements and is monitored around the clock by laboratory services.
As for the mass rotting of algae, such phenomena often occur in hot weather along the entire Black Sea coast — from Anapa to Bulgaria — that is, in places where no one has ever heard of “Infoksvodokanal.”
We do not aim to question the professional level of the authors of these sensational pseudo-studies, but we appeal to all Odesa residents and “shocked tourists” to trust only official and verified sources of information.
